Yael Schacher - Director for the Americas and Europe at Refugees International

"Immigration Enforcement Unbound: The Human Toll of a Second Trump Term - And What to Do About It"

Dr. Yael Schacher -  an esteemed scholar, advocate, and policy expert, who will speak directly to the policies and enforcement strategies that have blocked Khalida—and thousands like her—from entry in the United States. She will also talk about efforts to revoke the legal status, arrest, and deport (without due process and to dangerous third countries) a diverse array of non-citizens, including those who have come to study and to seek protection.

Dr. Schacher currently serves as the Director for the Americas and Europe at Refugees International, where she leads field missions and policy advocacy across borders, focusing on the rights of displaced people, asylum seekers, and migrants in both regions. Her work has taken her to detention centers, border crossings, refugee camps, and legal clinics across the Americas and Europe. In her role, she conducts legal advocacy, public education, and historical research to challenge unjust immigration policies. She regularly briefs members of the U.S. Congress and EU delegations, testifies before international bodies like the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, writes legal briefs for U.S. federal courts, Op-Eds for the general public, and is regularly consulted by policymakers and journalists for her expertise on asylum law, refugee resettlement, and immigration enforcement.
